Since 2005, more than 2,000 newspapers have closed in the United States, and as of 2020, nearly 4 million Americans live in a county without a newspaper. The loss of a newspaper can be a crisis for the news ecosystem within a community as few alternatives exist to replace them. In our upcoming webinar, hear from Dr. Jessica Mahone on how news ecosystems and news deserts are assessed, who lives in news deserts, and the significance of increasing news deserts in the U.S.

Research shows trust is an important factor in determining the public’s willingness to comply with health and safety recommendations during pandemics and other health crises. In July 2021, graduate students and researchers with the UF/IFAS Center for Public Issues Education in Agriculture and Natural Resources (PIE Center) took a new approach to assessing college students’ trust in video messages related to the COVID-19 vaccine.

This study used perception analyzer dials to assess moment-to-moment perceptions of videos developed by organizations such as the Ad Council, Centers for Disease Control, and Prevention, and University of Florida (UF) Health. This technology allowed researchers to determine key moments where trust was affected in each video.

In our upcoming webinar, Dr. Lauri Baker and Valentina Castano will present the research findings of this study as well as the benefits, challenges, and opportunities of utilizing perception analyzer dials in future research.

The Southeastern Coastal Center for Agricultural Health and Safety (SCCAHS) was established in 2016 to conduct research, education, and prevention projects to address the health and safety issues in the agriculture, forestry, fishing industries throughout the southeastern U.S. and U.S. territories in the Caribbean. In early 2022, SCCAHS, part of a national network with 10 other agricultural health and safety centers, conducted listening sessions with agricultural and Extension leaders to better understand emerging issues and new collaboration efforts related to agricultural health and safety.

Join Dr. Ashley McLeod-Morin to learn about opportunities to collaborate with SCCAHS and how you can work to address agricultural health and safety challenges in your region. Additionally, she will share updates on future research projects of the Center, potential pilot research projects, and other new ways the Center is looking to advance research, education, and prevention of health and safety issues in the agricultural sector.

Mississippi State University Extension professionals began the PROMISE Initiative (Preventing Opioid Misuse In the SouthEast) in 2017, with funding from USDA. The PROMISE Initiative seeks to fight the growing opioid epidemic using a multi-phased approach to prevent prescription opioid misuse in rural Mississippi. Within a year of receiving their initial grant for this work, they began to narrow their intervention focus from just rural areas to farmers and farm families. With data emerging on high rates of substance misuse, mental distress, and high suicide rates among farmers, this pivot was a “no-brainer.” Since then, the organization has engaged in a range of activities in this area, including producing an award-winning film that documents the stories of four farmers navigating the challenging nature of the agriculture industry. On June 29 at 11 a.m. Eastern / 10 a.m. Central, Dr. David Buys will present on the journey of making this film and its value since being released.

The COVID-19 pandemic was a time of crisis provoking fear of the unknown and threats to public safety and wellbeing. Science and health communicators must provide transparent messaging to give people the information they need in a way that is perceived as trusted and credible.

On April 27 at 11 a.m. Eastern, Styliana Resvanis and Samantha Murray will present lessons learned about crisis communication during the COVID-19 pandemic and ways of approaching vaccine hesitancy through community-based collaborations. The speakers will cover challenges with communicating science information to rural and minority populations, how to establish trust in said communication, as well as successful approaches and strategies.
