As the climate continues to change and become more variable, the working lands of Florida will experience increased production risks from hurricanes, drought, saltwater intrusion, flooding, insect, disease, and wildfire. Additionally, working conditions will likely deteriorate as air temperatures rise.  The causes of these stresses are complex, and cannot be easily solved.  However, producers can adapt management practices to reduce commodity risk and decrease the recovery time following a disturbance.  This talk will present the most recent assessment of climate change impacts for Florida, and will provide examples of how working land sustainability can be increased.  Material for this talk will be derived from current research findings and the just released Fifth National Climate Assessment.

Climate change affects human health by altering exposures to extreme events such as heat waves, floods, and droughts and alters persistent environmental conditions such as the quality and safety of air, food, and water. In the US Caribbean, long histories of colonization and systemic inequality have further shaped the ability of the citizens to maintain health and well-being. In our upcoming webinar, hear from Pablo Mendez-Lazaro as he discusses how a changing climate is affecting the people of US Caribbean territories. Dr. Mendez-Lazaro will share how proactive adaptations and interventions can reduce the risks and impacts of climate-sensitive health outcomes.

Climate trends and variability play an important role in agriculture and the risks faced by producers. Climate predictions and agricultural forecasting provide a critical support structure for the agricultural industry so producers can make informed decisions related to climate variability. In our upcoming webinar, hear from David Zierden as he shares about weather and climate threats as they apply to Southeast U.S. agricultural production. Zierden is the Florida State Climatologist from the Florida Climate Center, which is the leading authority on climate variability in Florida. Register for the webinar to learn about weather and climate trends related to extreme heat and cold, sea level rise, hurricanes, precipitation, and other factors that impact the stability of the agricultural industry.

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) uses biological or chemical indicators in sewage for the purpose of public health surveillance to provide information about the health of a community. WBE has been used to measure the prevalence of human viruses at the population level and recent studies have extensively tested for the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Information from these studies can inform mitigation strategies and policies for communities.

In our upcoming webinar, hear from Dr. Tara Sabo-Attwood as she shares information from WBE studies for SARS-CoV-2 monitoring in Florida and implications for strategies to reduce viral infections. Furthermore, Dr. Sabo-Attwood will discuss other WBE studies that analyze exposure to different chemical substances, including opioids and pesticides, and associated outcomes that impact urban communities and rural and agricultural regions in the US.

Chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) has emerged as a top health concern for agricultural workers in hot climate zones. While the cause is unknown, the leading hypothesis is that workers in hot climates are subject to repeated heat stress and dehydration.

In our upcoming webinar, hear from Dr. William Hogan as he shares his current research to study and improve a large, statewide infrastructure that includes electronic health record (EHR) and administrative claims data to assess the incidence and prevalence of CKDu in Florida. Dr. Hogan will discuss what is known about the data infrastructure focused on agricultural worker surveillance and how that is used to study CKDu in Florida.
