This webinar focuses on a pilot project by the Ag Health and Safety Alliance (AHSA) that led to the development of an innovative educational tool to strengthen eye-safety awareness among young adults working in agriculture.

In April 2025, AHSA conducted a 360-degree video capture on the Mississippi State University (MSU) farm in collaboration with OP McCubbins. The team produced immersive scenarios featuring real agricultural activities­, equipment operation, chemical handling, and general farm work-each filmed within authentic Mississippi agricultural settings. The videos showcased proper personal protective equipment (PPE) use, including face shields, chemical goggles, and safety glasses. Two young adult participants with experience in chemical handling, shop work, and welding served as role models throughout the filming process.

In September 2025, project personnel traveled to Mississippi to deliver the Gear Up for Ag program at MSU, which included the newly developed immersive Eye Safety 360° video. During this visit, a student focus group coordinated with OP McCubbins provided valuable feedback that is now guiding the final edits to the video.

Additional information will be presented about the Gear Up for Ag™ program, which is a unique health and safety training initiative designed for the next generation of agriculture. The program uses a combination of live demonstrations, virtual reality, 360° learning tools, and storytelling to engage participants. This program also includes Gear Up for Ag eLearning online health and safety resources that are provided to all participants and instructors.

]]> Florida’s livestock industry plays a critical role in the state’s economy, contributing more than $8.3 billion annually and supporting over 1.56 million cattle and 385,000 horses. However, this vital sector faces a renewed threat from the New World screwworm (NWS), a parasitic fly capable of causing severe injury, production losses, and even death in livestock, wildlife, and, in rare cases, humans. Following the detection of NWS in Texas in June 2026, concerns have grown about the potential reintroduction of the pest to other parts of the southeastern United States, including Florida.

Preliminary data from an ongoing study uncovers why Florida’s climate, livestock populations, wildlife resources, and international connections increase the state’s vulnerability to future infestations. The session will also explore the potential economic and One Health impacts of a reintroduction and discuss the importance of prevention, early detection, and preparedness efforts to protect Florida’s agricultural industry and economy.

]]> The emergence of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 poses a significant threat to the agriculture industry. The One Health approach, which is an interdisciplinary framework for addressing complex health issues, can enhance the response to H5N1 (avian influenza) outbreaks in agricultural settings.

In this webinar, Dr. Benjamin Anderson will present how this interdisciplinary strategy integrates human, animal, and environmental health to effectively manage and mitigate the risks posed by H5N1. Dr. Anderson will also discuss best practices in monitoring, prevention, and control efforts across sectors, emphasizing collaboration between veterinary, medical, and environmental professionals.

]]> Two large drivers for the emergence of zoonotic infectious diseases over the past century are land use changes and agricultural intensification. Further, with 36% of emerging infectious zoonotic diseases linked to livestock, understanding these dynamics is crucial for the health of agricultural workers and the broader community. 

In this webinar, Dr. Amy Vittor will share connections between intensified agricultural practices and the amplification of zoonotic pathogens. Vittor will delve into the varying levels of exposure to zoonotic diseases faced by agricultural workers on conventional smallholder farms compared to those working in agroforestry or regenerative farming systems. By examining these differences, Vittor’s research aims to provide actionable insights into how agricultural practices can influence the risk of zoonotic diseases and what measures can be implemented to enhance the safety of farm workers.

Join this webinar to learn about an ongoing research project investigating the incidence and prevalence of CKDu among agricultural communities in Florida. 

In this webinar, researchers Norman Beatty and John Diaz will share the current understanding of CKDu and its global impact, discuss hypotheses and potential contributing factors to CKDu, present research focused on investigating CKDu within Florida’s agricultural communities, and introduce their approach to analyzing occupational disparities, identifying geographical hotspots, and developing a multi-level and geospatial model for CKDu risk factors.

]]> While low back pain (LBP) is highly prevalent and potentially disabling, few intervention studies to mitigate LBP have been conducted in physically demanding agriculture settings and no studies have specifically addressed the needs of horticulture workers. Evidence from previous work indicated a high incidence of opioid use attributed to work-related injury or stress. In this upcoming webinar, learn about an ongoing study that is investigating the effectiveness of self-management strategies to increase awareness of opioid risk, manage pain without medication, and adjust work-related ergonomic risk to address this high-priority public health problem. Drs. Kim Dunleavy and Janeen Blythe will discuss the study goals and the design and development of video modules to match the specific needs of nursery and landscape businesses.
