Two large drivers for the emergence of zoonotic infectious diseases over the past century are land use changes and agricultural intensification. Further, with 36% of emerging infectious zoonotic diseases linked to livestock, understanding these dynamics is crucial for the health of agricultural workers and the broader community.

In this webinar, Dr. Amy Vittor will share connections between intensified agricultural practices and the amplification of zoonotic pathogens. Vittor will delve into the varying levels of exposure to zoonotic diseases faced by agricultural workers on conventional smallholder farms compared to those working in agroforestry or regenerative farming systems. By examining these differences, Vittor’s research aims to provide actionable insights into how agricultural practices can influence the risk of zoonotic diseases and what measures can be implemented to enhance the safety of farm workers.

The 2024 State of the Science Meeting from the Southeastern Coastal Center for Agricultural Health and Safety brought together several researchers and Extension professionals working at the intersection of agricultural health and safety research, policy, and outreach communication. In this episode, three speakers from the meeting reconvene to share a conversation highlighting the importance of culturally sensitive health interventions and innovative solutions to bridge healthcare gaps in rural areas. You’ll hear Dr. John Diaz. Dr. Lauri Baker, and Dr. David Buys discuss how factors like economic stability, education access, healthcare quality, neighborhood environment, and social context influence the health and well-being of farmworkers. Our guests also emphasize the vital role of Cooperative Extension in connecting land-grant universities with communities, particularly in the context of medicine and public health. Examples from Florida and Mississippi are highlighted, showing how the roles of Extension have evolved from primarily agricultural and home economics education to encompassing broader health initiatives.

While low back pain (LBP) is highly prevalent and potentially disabling, few intervention studies to mitigate LBP have been conducted in physically demanding agriculture settings and no studies have specifically addressed the needs of horticulture workers. Evidence from previous work indicated a high incidence of opioid use attributed to work-related injury or stress. In this upcoming webinar, learn about an ongoing study that is investigating the effectiveness of self-management strategies to increase awareness of opioid risk, manage pain without medication, and adjust work-related ergonomic risk to address this high-priority public health problem. Drs. Kim Dunleavy and Janeen Blythe will discuss the study goals and the design and development of video modules to match the specific needs of nursery and landscape businesses.

Young adults working in agriculture will likely face new challenges related to climate change, such as wearing PPE in hot conditions or modifying chemical inputs to address shifting conditions. This raises the importance of agricultural workers being able to interpret PPE from pesticide labels, don/doff PPE correctly, and store and care for it. In this webinar, you’ll hear about the development of a 360 training video to be implemented in the Gear Up for Ag program offered by the Ag Health and Safety Alliance™ (AHSA). The program’s primary focus is on pesticide handling, and this webinar will focus on a new 360° video describing the donning/doffing of common pesticides-related PPE and its storage and care created through a partnership between AHSA and Mississippi State University (MSU) faculty. Join the webinar to hear OP McCubbins, MSU Associate Professor and national expert in 360° video production, share about the design, production, and distribution of this visual technology.

Agriculture is among the most hazardous occupations worldwide and unique in that children and youth account for a percentage of the associated injuries and fatalities. Whether adolescents are actively working or simply present on farms, they can be exposed to unsafe conditions and experience higher rates of injuries and fatalities compared to adolescents in non-agricultural settings. It is important to account for risks to children and youth and create action plans specifically designed for adolescents in any agricultural workplace.

In our upcoming webinar, Barbara Lee will share some of the reasons that agricultural-related injuries and fatalities are still a persistent problem among adolescents in the United States. Dr. Lee will discuss the child development principles that guide interventions and provide recommendations to improve child and youth safety and health within agriculture.
